Home Decor Tips
In decorating your home, approach it one room at a time, offsetting color against neutral tones, ornate prints next to calming fabrics, and balancing size, scale, and proportion into one harmonious whole. You can stick to a period or style throughout the house or apartment, or you can mix an eclectic look that still looks right.

First, figure out the size and depth of your rooms. You don't want furniture, area rugs, or lighting fixtures that are too big or too small. You want them to fill the space without giving it a crowded or cluttered effect. In addition to considering how the furnishings are in relation to your given space, consider how the furnishings will be in relation to one another. Symmetry is always a good start, but asymmetry can work too and be interesting, as long as it isn't out of balance.

Once you have the larger pieces in place, go ahead and decorate with knick-knacks. Fill the shelves, mantelpiece, coffee table, and end tables with things that reflect your personal taste and style. Whether it is souvenirs from your travels or special occasion gifts you've received from the people you love, you can tie it all together for a unique look that no one else can duplicate.

Don't forget books, things people use for their convenience like coasters or napkin holders, wine decanters, candles, flowers, candy dishes, and scented objects. Clocks don't have to be on the wall to be useful. Wall hangings can be used as well as pictures, paintings, and photo galleries. Musical instruments are always lovely additions to your home, and you can place sculpture, artwork, pictures, vases, and candleholders on a piano, as well as music.

Table lamps and floor lamps add light and warmth to any room. Decorative pillows add color and intensity to a bland background. Cushions on the chairs add to your guests' comfort. What about an afghan or throw on the sofa for when its cold? Place a centerpiece of flowers or a cornucopia on the dining table. Live plants and flowers add life to your surroundings. An aquarium is colorful and soothing. Add a collection of china, silver, and crystal to a china cabinet. You can have the cabinet lighted inside for a dramatic effect, and glass doors will keep your prized possessions dust-free and untarnished.

These are all of the things you actually can have fun putting together. Decorating an interior should never be approached as a job or as something boring. Take your time and don't feel the need to finish it all at once. There will always be a new experience and a new keepsake to add to your collection. You will achieve a much more satisfying and lived-in look if it doesn't look as though you were in a hurry to throw it together. Wait! Tomorrow, you may find that perfect piece to fit your already close to perfect creation. Just enjoy the process and, eventually, you will love the result.
